Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise helped her develop a love for the arts and her creative side. She was a night nurse, allowing her aunt time that she required in the day for the love of writing, theatre and literature. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learned by example that art was an instrument for social activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who was a social conscience and advised DuVernay to express herself through art. Although DuVernay spent her childhood in Compton with her family she spent every summer at Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences was the marches for civil rights over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's time in Alabama's Selma inspired her to create a documentary about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. DuVernay was a student at University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she received diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in television journalism during her time as a college student. DuVernay began as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was asked to check the trash at the residence by a member jury. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism so she decided to go into the public relations sector. DuVernay was brought on straight after college, as an assistant publicist in a small studio. In 1999, she launched her own private company for public relations, called The DuVernay Agency.
